I’m a freelance art writer based in Manchester. I have written for titles including Frieze, Art Monthly, Aesthetica, AN, The Double Negative, and Corridor8, and undertake independent writing commissions from artists and galleries.

I’m also Exhibitions Editor at Creative Tourist – a preview-based arts and travel site that covers cultural events and destinations across the North. And co-founder and editor of the Fourdrinier – an Arts Council England funded online magazine about artists who work with paper, and a mentoring scheme for early-career artists and writers. I run this in association with PAPER Gallery Manchester.

I have previously worked for arts organisations including Liverpool Biennial and Manchester Art Gallery, and was regional editor at Corridor8 between 2017 and 2019.

I provide freelance writing, copywriting, editing and proofreading services and can be reached at sarajaspan1@gmail.com.

I commissioned Sara to write about my work in an attempt to understand my artwork and to find the words to talk about it. What happened was so much more profound, playful and impactful. This was down to Sara’s deeply creative instinct, her highly organised, sensitive approach to critical writing. This incredible exchange of words, theories, ideas, interpretations and questions has expanded my understanding of my artwork and the wider context it sits within. It has undoubtedly transformed my practice and brought about professional opportunities. Sara is a vital part of the Manchester art scene and community. Sara has a rare talent that brings care to the critical, lightness to the deep, fun to the thought. – Artist Lowri Evans, 2021

During the several occasions that I have worked with Sara she has been steady, considerate and has taken the time to deeply understand my art practice and my mindset. In doing so, she has always written about the work in an honest, intelligent and refreshing way. Her writing has been vital for me as a young artist – it has helped me to gain access to new opportunities, as well as understand my own thoughts and ideas more clearly. – Artist Hannah Lister, 2020

Sara brought fresh insight and perspective to our collaborative project, ‘Of Flesh Stone’, sensitively pulling together it’s multiple strands of meaning through her considered interpretation of the work. The resulting introductory piece was an absorbing point of entry for our audiences, providing them with the historical and theoretical frameworks with which to approach our work. – Artist Mario Popham, 2020

We were preparing to self-publish our first co-written book on the subject of creativity and, with all the back and forth that collaborating involves, we really needed a fresh pair of eyes on the manuscript to pick up all the things we were too close to see. In her fantastic copy edit, Sara more than exceeded our expectations. Sara has an incredibly thorough approach and showed an astute understanding of the book’s aims – it was evident from the first few pages that our manuscript had been in safe hands. Writing and then self-publishing a book can be daunting. Finding an editor you can trust is a huge part of that. We’re so grateful to Sara, whose attention to detail and enthusiasm for our book really helped us take our manuscript to the next level. – Career coaches & authors of ‘Seven Creative Gremlins’, Nicola Jackson and Teresa Wilson, 2019

I found the process of collaborating with Sara extremely enriching, having never worked with a writer before I didn’t expect the impact that the experience would have on my practice. Being able to spend an extended period with someone that was previously unaware of my work, discussing ideologies and process, along with their own interpretations helped to strengthen my own understanding of what I was making, cementing clear lines of enquiry and my ability to articulate the methodologies underpinning my practice. – Artist John Powell Jones, 2018

Sara has written for award-winning online arts and culture magazine Creative Tourist for several years; a bright light in the magazine’s list, she stands out for the elegance and intelligence with which she writes. Highly professional in her approach to research, deadlines and editing, she also has an eye for the ‘hook’ of a story, and is able to turn her particularly engaging style to a wide range of subjects. – Writer and previous editor of Creative Tourist, Polly Checkland Harding, 2017
